Peter Appleton is surely an ambitious young film writer employed by HHS Studios during Hollywood's Golden Age, 1951 particularly. "Ashes to Ashes" is getting ready to launch, and he's dating the appealing film star, Sandra Sinclair. Simply when almost everything appears to be proceeding his way, it is identified he (unwittingly) attended a Communist meeting during university when pulled there by his girlfriend at the time, and therefore heavy mistrust settles over him and he will need to stand before Congress. Scared of exactly what may possibly occur when they don't, HHS cancels Appleton's agreement and aborts the release date of the picture. An automobile incident costs him his memory, and in the small coastal city where he ends up, he is mistaken for a local hero, presumed lifeless nearly ten years ago during the war. Not able to remember anything of his "past" in the city, Appleton not just holds his completely new personality, but becomes a pillar of the local community, restoring hope that the citizens lost along with a lot of their young men in World War II. Along the way, he finds new motivation, new goal, and a new life. Director Frank Darabont, true to form, tells a unhurried history of a man's restored belief in himself and in others. The movie is an homage to old-fashioned ideals and proud-to-be-an-American patriotism, studded with rock-solid performances not only by Carrey, but by picture veterans Martin Landau, Hal Holbrook, and Ron Rifkin, and others. Pay attention as well for cameo voice overs by Garry Marshall, Matt Damon, and Carl and Rob Reiner.
